While Dubai really is one of the safest cities in the UAE, as it is with many metropolitan cities, it isn’t without its problems. Here are some of the things you need to look out for so you’re not scammed while trying to enjoy your holiday.

  1. UNOFFICIAL TAXIS
Although most parts of the city are highly regulated, there is still a slight chance that you’ll get scammed into taking an unofficial taxi and charged ridiculously high rates. Also, at the airport avoid people claiming to be cab drivers, follow the signs leading up to the area designated for official taxis. How to spot an official taxi? 1. FAKE MOBILE PHONES & DATA PACKAGES
Typically found in the older parts of Dubai, these scammers will stand outside on the streets, or mall parking lots and try to sell you cheap phones or data packages. The best option is for you to go inside the all or a legitimate phone store to purchase either a phone or a data package. DU and Etisalat are the largest internet providers.

  1. WINNING THE LOTTERY
Beware of the common ‘you’ve won the lottery’ call or text messages. Once you have an active phone number in Dubai, this is likely to happen. The callers will typically congratulate you on winning an enormous amount of money, then proceed to ask for your bank details – don’t be fooled! Absolutely no one ever wins the lottery like that in Dubai.

  1. FAKE GOLD
Dubai, undoubtedly the city of gold and famous for its enormous Gold Souq “market”. Most tourists want to buy something, even if it’s a small piece of gold, as a souvenir from the trip or perhaps as gifts for friends or loved ones. Whatever the case, ensure that the gold store you are in has a registered number but most importantly, if the prices seem too good to be true, it is likely that the gold isn’t really as well.

  1. PICKPOCKETS
As it is common in large cities around the world, we will always have to deal with pickpockets. In Dubai, a common strategy is to spill something on you, such as tea, a drink or water, and then rob you while pretending to help. Be vigilant at all times and keep your valuables safe in a closed bag and not in your pockets.
